I Love Christmas

I love Christmas.  More broadly, I love the Advent Season (what the non-Church calendar folk call the Christmas or Holliday Season).  Yes, I love the carols and hymns.  I love the lights and tree, the decorations and even the weather.  But these are all superficial things.

The primary reason I love Christmas is because I am such an evil, filthy sinner.  Paul claims to be the chief of sinners and if he ever did hold that title, it was only because I had not yet been born.  When Paul writes about doing what he doesn’t want to do and not doing what he know he ought, he must have been reverse channeling my very thoughts and circumstance. I am a sinner.  That is why I love Christmas so very much, why I hold it so dear.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

The Cross is why Christmas is so very special.  The substitutionary sacrifice of Christ is the reason for Christmas, the reason to celebrate it and hold it close and dear.  This whole season is leading up to the celebration of my Savior’s entry into this world.  Oh joy!  Oh sweet delight!  Words cannot express how very glad I am that Christmas is here yet again.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
