Constellations of Flame

One of the most interesting moments of my trip from the California coast to Kansas City occurred during a three hour delay on highway 299 in northern California. Due to fires, the highway was only open at specific times when CalTrans and CHP would shuttle a convey through the fire lines. I had just missed one thus was forced to wait till the next.
As it grew dark, I began to see flickers of orange on the mountainside across the river. Little spot fires created flickering constellations in the darkness. Occasionally a small shower of sparks would cascade down the mountain, occasionally birthing a new star. Once a star seemed to burst into a supernova, then dwindled away till it was almost imperceptible.
Three hour wait, but a light show I’d never experienced before.
